Mike did his first degree in biochemistry at Oxford University followed by a PhD in neurochemical pharmacology at Cambridge University, under the supervision of Dr Leslie Iversen.He did postdoctoral training at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, the Australian National University, the University of Sheffield and at the MRC Clinical Pharmacology Unit in Oxford. He then joined Wyeth Research (UK) and spent 10 years there, finally as Director of Molecular Pharmacology. Following the decision to close Wyeth Research (UK) he joined the Yamanouchi Research Institute in Oxford, as Manager, Scientific Affairs. YRI was also closed in 2002 and Mike then moved to become Director of R&D Strategy at Yamanouchi UK Ltd, reporting to the Head of Discovery Research in Japan. He continued to hold this position following the merger of Yamanouchi and Fujisawa to form Astellas Pharma Inc until his retirement in 2016.
